David Seagraves

David Seagraves of Harrisburg said the altruism that led him to join the Duke-MURDOCK Study came from his mother, who taught him to “give and it will come back to you in good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over.”

“We just want to be a part of giving back to the community and help solve problems not for us, but for the future,” Seagraves said. “We are our brother’s keeper, after all.”

Seagraves believes so strongly in the MURDOCK Study that he referred a friend who enrolled, which automatically entered Seagraves into the quarterly Refer-A-Friend Raffle. He won a $50 gift card!

“Hopefully, with 12,000 of us now, researchers will be able to use our data to find cures for diseases and new treatments,” he said.

Nearly 12,000 residents of Cabarrus County and the surrounding area have joined the MURDOCK Study so far.

Seagraves worked as an electrical maintenance technician for Philip Morris for 28 years, from the day the Cabarrus County plant opened until the day it closed in 2009. He helped lead the company’s philanthropy program, which raised money and awarded grants to nonprofit agencies in the nine counties where employees lived. Now retired, Seagraves enjoys traveling to Surfside Beach, S.C. with his wife.

They joined the MURDOCK Study after their daughter, Jenna, who was a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, told them about the North Carolina Research Campus. He learned about Duke University’s work in Kannapolis to understand disease at the molecular level and decided to help by enrolling in the study and completing an Annual Follow-Up Form every year.

Everyone who fills out an Annual Follow-Up Form is automatically entered into a quarterly raffle for a prize worth up to $150. Follow-up information is crucial to the success of the MURDOCK Study, and each completed Annual Follow-Up form is a valuable part of this unique community-based research project.

Participants like Seagraves who refer a friend or family member who then enrolls are entered into the Refer-a-Friend Raffle with the chance to win a prize valued at $50.
